Artist Statement
Recently I have been channeling my anger towards humanity and our treatment towards animals into my artwork. I’ve found that communicating how I feel about the treatment of animals through artwork is the most effective way of getting that message to people. However, another main motivator of my work recently has been the goal of making the viewer ask themselves questions. How do they feel about what I’ve made? Does it make them uncomfortable?
Acrylic, charcoal, ink, and watercolor are the mediums that I work with the most. I layer them, mix them, and smother them all over one another to create the textures and effects that are frequent throughout my work. I am still developing my style and being able to explore each of these mediums allows me to do that more freely. For my meat paintings, I have tried to be as direct as I can while painting what I see. It is quite simply just the meat on the page. However, the reactions that this can stir up from viewers has proven to be mixed. Some of my colleagues view it as disgusting while others see it as delicious and tempting. Moving forward with my work, I want to push this idea. How far can I go before even the people who find it enticing are appalled?
